Types of Common HRT Drugs:

Prempro- Wyeth Pharmaceutical’s Prempro is the number one selling hormone replacement drug that was the source of concern and the reason why the WHI study was halted. The combination of estrogen and progestin was intended to help a woman with menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings.

Premarin- Wyeth’s Premarin is an estrogen replacement therapy pill that has been available for sixty years. Estrogen replacement therapy is usually prescribed for women who have had a hysterectomy. The WHI study is still continuing on estrogen only hormone replacement therapy because researchers have not yet determined the risk and benefit of the pills.

Premphase- Premphase is a hormone replacement drug similar to the other drug Prempro, combining estrogen and progestin.

Hormone Replacement Therapy ( HRT ) Side Effects

Hormone Replacement Therapy Side Effects
The risk of serious hormone replacement therapy side effects was so substantial it shocked the medical world that had made it habit to encourage every woman who had not had a hysterectomy to begin when entering menopause. For decades hormone replacement therapy has been available and encouraged to use for millions and millions of women without really knowing the long-term side effects in the estrogen and progestin combination. The announcement on July 9, 2002 came that the first and only large study comparing healthy women on hormone replacement therapy to placebos was being halted due to the surprise findings of HRT side effects. The researchers concluded it would be unethical to continue the study by putting the 16,000 study participants and 6 million American women currently taking the pills at more risk for hormone replacement therapy side effects.

The study found an increased risk of hormone replacement therapy side effects for the following conditions:

Heart Disease
The Women’s Health Initiative study showed that estrogen/progestin hormones do not protect against heart disease as earlier thought. The study found that hormone replacement therapy side effects actually raise the risk of heart disease by 23%.

Breast Cancer
The Women’s Health Initiative definitively proved that hormone replacement therapy side effects do raise the risk of invasive breast cancer. The earlier thirty studies were unable to prove the serious side effects that were shown to occur 26% more in women taking hormone replacement therapy pills.

Stroke
Strokes become more likely as people age and as their blood vessels age as well. When blood vessels age they become less flexible and can lead to buildup in blood pressure that causes strokes. Women taking hormone replacement therapy is at higher risk of blood clots because estrogen tends to promote them. The blood clots can add to the risk of stroke that was found to occur 38% more in women suffering hormone replacement therapy side effects.

Blood Clots
Blood clots have been shown to occur 100% in women with hormone replacement therapy side effects. The high increased risk of blood clots also raises the risk of stroke.
